The emergence of e-commerce has made it easier for businesses to reach a wider range of consumers. However, many local business owners have yet to transition to digital business.

A report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that in 2023, 58.49% of businesses in Indonesia did not sell using e-commerce.

It was recorded that the majority, or 77.6%, of businesses did not use e-commerce because they were more comfortable selling directly.

Furthermore, 28.96% of local businesses felt a lack of knowledge regarding e-commerce, 28.84% were not interested in selling through e-commerce, and 18.04% of businesses had other reasons.

In general, BPS recorded 41.51%, or 3.81 million, e-commerce businesses spread across the country in 2023. This number is estimated to have increased by 27.40% compared to 2022, when there were 2.99 million e-commerce businesses.

BPS conducted this survey on a sample of 40,011 e-commerce businesses spread across 38 provinces and 365 regencies/cities. The sample in this survey consisted of businesses that used the internet to receive orders or sales of goods/services during 2023.
