According to the report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the literacy rate (AMH) for the population aged over 15 in Indonesia reached 97.10% in 2025. This marks the highest record in the last decade.

AMH measures the ability to read and write simple sentences using Latin script and/or other scripts in daily life.

Throughout 2015-2025, Indonesia's AMH consistently showed a positive trend. However, it briefly declined in 2018, as shown in the graph.

BPS stated that this increase aligns with the government's target of achieving an illiteracy-free Indonesia.

To achieve this target, by 2025, the government is said to have implemented several programs, such as distributing operational assistance for literacy programs, revitalizing formal education units, digitizing learning, and developing educational volunteer programs in the regions.

Nevertheless, there is still a gender gap in AMH. In 2025, the AMH for males was recorded higher at 98.18%, while the AMH for females was at 96.03%.
