Indonesian Water Companies Increase in 2023: A Two-Decade Trend

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 550 clean water companies in Indonesia in 2023. This is an increase of 7 units or 1.29% compared to 2022, when 543 companies were recorded.

"This increase is due to the addition of companies resulting from the *matching* of the BPS directory with the directory of the Indonesian Clean Water Company Association (PERPAMSI)," BPS wrote in its report titled *Clean Water Statistics 2019-2023*.

This increase is found in Aceh (2 companies); West Java (2 companies); North Sulawesi (1 company); Southeast Sulawesi (1 company); Maluku (1 company); and North Maluku (1 company).

Although the number of clean water companies increased nationally, several provinces experienced a decrease, including DKI Jakarta, West Papua, and Papua.

The decrease in clean water companies in DKI Jakarta is due to the merger of several companies. Meanwhile, in Papua, it is due to the division of the region into four new provinces: Southwest Papua, Central Papua, and Papua Mountains.

Lampung is the province with the most water companies nationally, with 44 companies. This is followed by Central Java with 42 companies; North Sumatra with 41 companies; and East Java with 38 companies.

Of the total water companies in 2023, 60,096 jobs were created. This consists of 48% technical workers and 52% non-technical workers.

The trend shows that the number of clean water companies in Indonesia has generally increased over the last two decades. The highest number occurred in 2006 with 641 companies. The lowest level was in 2004 with 475 companies.
