The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that only 27.28% of households in Papua Province had access to decent and affordable housing in 2022. This figure is down from 28.92% the previous year, and the lowest among the 33 other provinces in Indonesia.
The provinces with the next lowest access to decent and affordable housing are Bangka Belitung Islands (30.79%), followed by Jakarta (36.69%), and East Nusa Tenggara (41.8%).
This is followed by Riau Islands (46.49%), West Java (53.37%), West Papua (53.81%), Central Kalimantan (54.07%), Bengkulu (54.98%), and West Sulawesi (55.37%).
Nationally, the percentage of households with access to decent and affordable housing was 60.68% in 2022. Fifteen provinces were below the national average, while 19 were above.
The Special Region of Yogyakarta had the highest percentage of access to decent and affordable housing nationally, at 84.94%, followed by Bali (81.65%), and East Kalimantan (73.18%).
The right to housing is a human right internationally recognized. The international community's commitment to supporting the fulfillment of this right is enshrined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a global action to end poverty, reduce inequality, and protect the environment.
