Failing to Meet Presidential Candidate Nomination Requirements, Golkar Party's DPR Seat Acquisition from 1999-2019

The Golkar Party (Golongan Karya), initially known as the Sekretariat Bersama Golongan Karya, was founded in 1964. Although it participated in general elections (Pemilu) since 1971, Golkar only became a political party in 1999.

In the 1999 general election (the first post-reform election), Golkar secured 23.67 million (22.43%) of the national valid votes. This resulted in 120 seats (25.97%) in the House of Representatives (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat - DPR).

Following this election, Golkar's share of seats in the DPR consistently declined. In the 2004 election, Golkar obtained only 23.09% of DPR seats. Then, in the 2009 election, the party with the banyan tree logo only achieved 18.93% of legislative seats.

In the 2014 election, the Golkar Party only managed to secure 16.25% of DPR seats. Similarly, in the 2019 election, the party currently led by Minister of Industry Airlangga Hartarto, only achieved 14.78% of DPR seats.

With its 2019 election results, the Golkar Party is insufficient to nominate a presidential and vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election (Pilpres) without forming a coalition with other parties. Similarly, based on the vote count, Golkar only received 12.31% of the national valid votes. This figure is below the presidential nomination threshold (Presidential Threshold) of 25%.

As is known, the Golkar Party, along with the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the United Development Party (PPP), declared the United Indonesia Coalition (KIB) on May 12, 2022.
