Survey: Majority of the Public Believe There is a Practice of Bribery to Superiors in the Indonesian National Police

Several negative issues related to the Indonesian National Police (Polri) institution are currently under public scrutiny. One of them concerns the practice of subordinates giving money or payments to superiors within the Polri.

Results from a survey by Indikator Politik Indonesia show that the majority of the public, or 93.6% of respondents, believe that there is a practice of subordinates making payments to superiors in the Indonesian National Police.

Meanwhile, only 5.3% of respondents said they did not believe in the practice of subordinates making payments to superiors within the Polri. 1.1% of respondents did not know/did not answer.

Burhanudin Muhtadi, Executive Director of Indikator Politik Indonesia, said this issue is homework, or a PR problem, for the National Police Chief, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo. According to him, if General Sigit wants to improve the image of the Polri, this problem must be resolved as soon as possible.

"In my opinion, if the National Police Chief wants to clean up and restore the good name of the police, he should thoroughly investigate it," said Burhanudin, as quoted from a press conference on Sunday (28/11).

The same survey shows that 21.7% of respondents know of or have heard of the practice of payments within the police force.

Furthermore, the survey also notes that 49% of respondents believe that National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo will be serious about eliminating the practice of subordinates making payments to superiors within the Polri.

"But the public is equally divided between those who believe and those who do not believe that this practice of payments will disappear or at least decrease by 49%," said Burhanudin.

This survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,220 people aged 17 years or older, or who are married, between October 30 and November 5, 2022. Sample selection was conducted using a multistage random sampling method with a margin of error of approximately 2.9% at a 95% confidence level.
