Not a Public Figure, Yet Family Influences Political Party Choice the Most

Before choosing a political party, the public certainly considers various factors. Political parties also put forward a variety of candidate backgrounds, one of which is public figures, to boost their party's popularity.

However, the results of a survey by *Kompas* Research and Development (Litbang *Kompas*) actually do not point to public figures. The party influencing people's decisions in choosing a political party most comes from family. The proportion reaches 47.6% of the total respondents.

Family in this context refers to parents, spouse, children, and siblings.

"Therefore, when talking about party popularity, the basis of recognition down to the smallest social structure, namely the family, needs to be considered," said Vincentius Gitiyarko, the author of the *Kompas* Research and Development report.

Second place is followed by community leaders, including neighborhood unit (RT) and community unit (RW) heads, village heads, sub-district heads, and organizational figures, with a percentage of 18%. Then, friends occupy the fourth position with a percentage of 11.3%.

Meanwhile, the influence of public figures is in third place with 16.3%. Public figures here include influencers, artists, and well-known figures.

Then, religious figures such as ustaz, kiai, romo, and pastor are in last place with 6.9%.

This survey involved 1,200 respondents randomly selected using a stratified systematic sampling method in 38 provinces in Indonesia.

Data collection was carried out from April 29 to May 10, 2023, using face-to-face interview methods, with a margin of error of around 2.8% and a confidence level of 95%.
