Did President Jokowi Betray the PDI-P? Citizens' Perspectives

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has approved his eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run as a prospective vice-presidential candidate alongside prospective presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto in the 2024 General Election.

According to an Indikator survey, the majority of citizens disagree or strongly disagree that this move constitutes a betrayal by Jokowi of his original party, the PDI-P, which is supporting the presidential and vice-presidential candidate pair Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.

The Indikator survey recorded that 44.1% of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that Jokowi betrayed the PDI-P.

However, 34.7% of respondents agreed that Jokowi's approval for Gibran constitutes a betrayal of the PDI-P.

Meanwhile, 21.3% of respondents did not know or did not answer.

The Indikator survey also found that public opinion is divided regarding Jokowi's political stance in approving Gibran as a prospective vice-presidential candidate.

"The majority of citizens, 66.7%, believe that President Jokowi has the right to determine his political decisions, even if they don't align with his party, the PDI-P," said Burhanuddin Muhtadi, Senior Researcher at Indikator Politik Indonesia, in a virtual press conference on Sunday (12/11/2023).

On the other hand, 21.1% of respondents believe that Jokowi's stance does not show respect for the PDI-P, the party that nurtured him.

This survey involved 1,220 respondents aged 17 years and older or who are married. The sample was taken using a multistage random sampling method from all Indonesian provinces, proportionally distributed.

Data collection was conducted from October 27 to November 1, 2023, using face-to-face interview methods. The survey's margin of error is 2.9% with a 95% confidence level.
