Ethnic Background: A Crucial Factor in West Java's Regional Elections

Kompas Research and Development (Litbang) conducted a public opinion poll regarding the background of regional heads approved by the people of West Java (Jabar).

The results show that the majority, or 93.3% of respondents, approve of regional heads from local indigenous groups.

A significant number also approve of incumbent regional heads, with a proportion of 84.8%.

"Considering track records, coupled with the factor of being a native of West Java, is expected to make future leadership more understanding of the problems and characteristics faced by the people of West Java," said the Kompas Litbang team in their report on Wednesday (17/7/2024).

As many as 80.8% of respondents also approved of regional heads from the younger generation, 74.8% from the military, 70.2% from community organizations or Islamic religious leaders, and 57.8% from the older generation.

Meanwhile, regional heads from women received the lowest approval rating, at only 53.8%.

This Kompas Litbang survey involved 500 respondents randomly selected using a stratified systematic sampling method in West Java Province.

Data collection was conducted from June 15-20, 2024, through face-to-face interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.9% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
