Online media is one of the most accessed sources of information for Indonesian citizens. However, most people never check the background of the news portals they visit.
This is evident from a survey report resulting from a collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) and the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), titled *Digital Literacy Status in Indonesia 2022*.
“No more than 30% of respondents frequently engage in positive habits when reading online news, such as reading from more than one online media source for the same issue, checking strange domains, and reading the ‘about us’ section to learn about the media’s background,” stated the Kominfo Ministry team in their report.
The survey found that the proportion of respondents who very frequently read more than one online media source was only 4%, and those who frequently did so was 24%.
Furthermore, only 1% of respondents very frequently checked strange news website addresses (e.g., imitation sites named Kompass.com), and 10% frequently did so.
Meanwhile, only 1% of respondents very frequently read the ‘about us’ section of an online media website, and 9% frequently did so.
On the other hand, the majority of respondents never engaged in these positive habits, with the proportions detailed in the graph.
The Ministry of Kominfo and KIC conducted this survey on 10,000 internet users aged 13-70 years, spread across 34 provinces and 514 regencies/cities in Indonesia.
The survey was conducted from August to September 2022 through face-to-face interviews. Sampling was done using multistage random sampling, with a margin of error of approximately 0.98% and a 95% confidence interval.
Respondents had diverse backgrounds, including housewives, entrepreneurs, employees, students, farmers, and others. The complete report on this survey can be accessed and downloaded via the link: https://survei.literasidigital.id/.
