Concerns about economic pressure have become one of the most frequently discussed issues regarding the middle class in Indonesian online media reports.

This was revealed in a Databoks report titled "The Middle Class on the Brink of Vulnerability: Social Media Listening Report 2026".

Databoks analyzed online media reports on middle-class issues over the period from January 1, 2025 to February 20, 2026.

Of the 6,928 media articles collected, the majority, or 51%, had a negative sentiment.

"Media reports are dominated by the framing of economic pressures faced by society, especially related to the weakening of purchasing power due to rising living costs," Databoks wrote in its report.

Online media reports also extensively highlighted job uncertainty and the threat of layoffs, stagnant incomes, the burden of tax policies, issues with health service financing (BPJS), and difficulties in accessing housing.

Meanwhile, reports with a positive sentiment accounted for 28.9% and those with a neutral tone for 20.2%.

Positive reports generally highlighted various efforts to improve public welfare. These included discussions on reducing poverty rates, government aid distribution, and improving access to health services through BPJS.
