Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) Detects 208 Hotspots Across Indonesia, Most in North Maluku (Friday, December 29, 2023)

Based on the forest and land fire monitoring system SiPongi of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), the last 24-hour monitoring shows 208 hotspots detected in Indonesia.

This data is the result of satellite imagery from Terra/Aqua, SNPP, and NOAA accessed on Friday (29/12/2023) at 13:56 WIB. Of the 208 detected hotspots, 3 have a high confidence level, 197 are medium scale, and 8 are low scale.

The confidence level of hotspots is divided into 3 scales. The low scale ranges from 0-29, the medium scale from 30-79, and the high scale from 80-100. The higher the confidence level of a hotspot, the higher the likelihood of a forest and land fire in that area.

The highest number of detected hotspots is in North Maluku with 32 points. South Sulawesi is second with 25 hotspots. South Kalimantan is third with 22 hotspots.

19 hotspots were detected in Papua, followed by East Kalimantan with 18 hotspots, and Southeast Sulawesi and Central Sulawesi each having 15 and 10 detected hotspots respectively.

Hotspots are coordinate points of an area with a higher surface temperature than its surroundings, and not the number of forest and land fire incidents.

However, a large number of hotspots clustered in one area indicates the occurrence of forest and land fires. This means that hotspot data from remote sensing satellites remains the most effective method for monitoring forest and land fires over large areas.
