Mount Dukono Erupts Again Today, Volcanic Ash Reaches 1,500 Meters

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 5:00 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 4 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,500 meters above the peak (2,587 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 21 millimeters and a duration of 47.47 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dukono's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on April 25, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 7 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4-27 millimeters and durations of 38.31-51.41 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 volcanic quake with an amplitude of 7 millimeters, s-p 3.33 seconds, and a duration of 25.89 seconds, and 3 distant tectonic quakes with amplitudes of 4-5 millimeters, s-p 18.09-25.55 seconds, and durations of 92.21-95.24 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 587 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (194 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 16 times.
