Mount Ibu Erupts Again Early This Morning (Wednesday, May 8, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 01:58 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 2,000 meters above the peak or 3,325 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the east and southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 127 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on May 8, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 6 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 20-296 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 70 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-26 millimeters and durations of 4-50 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 76-305 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 647 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (219 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 78 times.
