Mount Ibu Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 1,200 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (May 9, 2024) at 6:35 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 10 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,200 meters above the peak (2,525 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10 millimeters and a duration of 277 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 9, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 56 seconds.

Then, 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 4 mm and a duration of 80 seconds, and 33 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-18 millimeters and durations of 17-44 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 3-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 659 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (226 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 80 times.
