Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 900 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday (May 7, 2024) at 2:33 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 900 meters above the peak or 2,323 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Ili Lewotolok was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on May 7, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 9 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 9.9-19.9 millimeters and durations of 130-315 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 80 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2.5-17.8 millimeters and durations of 21-259 seconds, and 1 hybrid/multiple-phase earthquake with an amplitude of 10.4 millimeters, s-p 1.4 seconds, and a duration of 18 seconds.

PVMBG urges the community around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and the communities of Lamatokan and Jontona villages to always be aware of the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the east side of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 644 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (218 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 59 times.
