Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Wednesday, April 24, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Wednesday (24/4/2024) at 11:53 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 12 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak (2,125 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 36 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 24, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 8 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and durations of 19-36 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 19 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 4-15 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 4.2 millimeters, s-p 0.71 seconds, and a duration of 5 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 578 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (188 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 68 times.
