Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning, Ash Column Reaches 500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (14/4/2024) at 05.26 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 22 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak (1,923 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 17.4 millimeters and a duration of 87 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 14, 2024, from 18.00 to 23.59 WITA showed 1 eruption/volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 23.2 millimeters and a duration of 46 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 79 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.6-23.9 millimeters and durations of 18-305 seconds, and 2 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.8-3.2 millimeters and durations of 389-417 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava flows/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 526 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (172 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 47 times.
