Mount Ibu Erupts Again Today, Eruption Height Reaches 5,000 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 09.12 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 6 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 5,000 meters above the peak (6,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on May 13, 2024, from 00.00 to 06.00 WIT showed 36 times of tremor events with amplitudes of 2-24 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds. Furthermore, there were 187 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 6-15 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 684 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (239 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 83 times.
