Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Reaches Approximately 3,500 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 00.37 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 16 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 3,500 meters above the peak (4,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 206 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 28, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 11 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 32-252 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 84 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 14-52 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 75-99 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 592 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (196 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 72 times.
