Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height 400 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 05:51 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 21 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 400 meters above the peak (1,823 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 15.3 millimeters and a duration of 46 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on April 12, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 1 eruption/explosion earthquake with an amplitude of 15.3 millimeters and a duration of 96 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 51 puffing earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-21.5 millimeters and durations of 96-402 seconds, and 13 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-7.3 millimeters and durations of 213-1860 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity. The residents of Lamawolo, Lamatokan, and Jontona villages are advised to remain vigilant against potential hazards from lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 519 volcanic eruptions/explosions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (167 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 46 times.
