The Innovation Level of ASEAN Countries in 2025, How is Indonesia doing?

Through the Global Innovation Index (GII) in 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) assesses the innovation levels of 139 countries worldwide.

In the ASEAN group, Singapore scored the highest index score of 59.9 out of a scale of 0-100 points.

Below Singapore is Malaysia with a GII score of 40.6 points. Then Vietnam completes the top three with a score of 37.1 points.

Indonesia itself is in sixth place in ASEAN with a score of 31.3 points. At the global level, Indonesia ranks 55th.

WIPO stated that Indonesia is part of middle-income countries with significant innovation movements, along with China, India, Turkey, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Iran.

"It ranks among the top 70 GII countries that have experienced the fastest rankings increase since 2013," WIPO said in its report.

Here is the list of GII scores for the ASEAN group in 2025 according to WIPO:

• Singapore: 59.9 points
• Malaysia: 40.6 points
• Vietnam: 37.1 points
• Thailand: 36.7 points
• Philippines: 33.6 points
• Indonesia: 31.3 points
• Brunei Darussalam: 24.5 points
• Cambodia: 22.0 points
• Laos: 20.1 points
• Myanmar: 17.3 points.

The conceptual framework of the GII focuses on two sub-indices with equal weighting, namely innovation input and output.

Input represents various factors that drive and enable innovation. The components evaluated are institutions, human resources and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, and business sophistication.

Then output represents the results of innovation, measured by knowledge and technology products, as well as creative products.

These various indicators are processed into a score on a scale of 0-100 points. The higher the score, the higher the innovation capacity of a country is assumed to be.
