Lewotolok Volcano Erupts Tuesday Morning, Alert Level Raised

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 05:55 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20.2 millimeters and a duration of 210 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on May 7, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 20.2-23.7 millimeters and durations of 109-210 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 69 tremor events with amplitudes of 3.6-26.9 millimeters and durations of 99-489 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 6.6 millimeters (S-P not observed) and a duration of 228 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, to not enter and not carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and the communities of Lamatokan and Jontona villages to remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 640 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (215 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 58 times.
