The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) reports that more than half of the teachers in Indonesia are Civil Servants (PNS). A total of 1,520,354 individuals, or 52% of all teachers in Indonesia, have PNS status.
However, 48% of teachers are not PNS, requiring the government to address their welfare. 704,503 are school honorarium teachers.
This number of honorarium teachers is equivalent to 24% of the total number of teachers in Indonesia. Furthermore, 401,182 are foundation permanent teachers (GTY).
There are also 141,724 non-permanent teachers (GTT) at the regency/city level. Kemendikbud also reports 13,328 with provincial GTT status. Finally, 3,770 are central government-assisted teachers.
Non-PNS teachers often lack adequate welfare, resulting in suboptimal teaching. Therefore, the government provides opportunities for teachers to register for the civil servant (ASN) selection for government employees with contract agreements (PPPK).
