Mount Ibu Erupts Early Friday, Status is Alert

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday (22/8/2025) at 01.02 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 23 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 52 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcano activity report, Mount Ibu''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 22, 2025, at 00.00-23.59 WIT showed 141 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-84 seconds.

Then, 5 times of exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-9 millimeters and earthquake durations of 33-51 seconds, and 20 times of harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 27-148 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu''s active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,734 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,298 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 2,106 times.
