Prevalence of Inadequate Food Consumption in Padang City Decreased by 0.29% in the Last Year

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Padang City, West Sumatra, reached 6.52% in 2023.

This figure is down 0.29% from the previous year's 6.81%, while it has increased by 2.76% over the past five years.

The average PoU in Indonesia was 8.53% in 2023. This means that the PoU in Padang City is lower than the national average.

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) defines PoU as a condition where a person regularly consumes insufficient food to meet the energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life. This indicator can be used as a tool to assess food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that the percentage of Padang City residents who consume food but lack sufficient energy intake is less than 6.52% of the total population.

Compared to 18 other districts/cities in West Sumatra Province, Padang City ranks 5th in terms of PoU. The areas with the lowest PoU (top ranking) are Sawahlunto/Sijunjung Regency (5.88%), and the highest (bottom ranking) is Mentawai Islands Regency (10.62%).
