Mount Marapi Erupts Again Today, Ash Plume Reaches 250 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Tuesday (6/1/2026) at 04:58 AM Western Indonesia Time. In the last week, Mount Marapi has only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to be around 250 meters above the peak or 3,141 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.1 millimeters and a duration of 35 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on January 6, 2026, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 4 instances of emission tremors with an amplitude of 0.6-3.3 millimeters and a tremor duration of 19-36 seconds.

Additionally, there were 8 local tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 1-29.3 millimeters s-p 1.8-6.6 seconds and an earthquake duration of 19-52 seconds, as well as 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 1.3-3.5 millimeters s-p 13.4-31 seconds and an earthquake duration of 64-125 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 73 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (38 times) while Mount Marapi erupted 1 time.
