Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning (Wednesday, August 7, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at 10:36 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 10 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 44 millimeters and a duration of 372 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 7, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 3 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 32-101 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 10 seconds, and 5 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-47.3 millimeters, s-p 0.8-1.7 seconds, and durations of 10-17 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the north-northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,456 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (835 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 463 times.
