Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Thursday, August 8, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 09:27 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 44 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations from August 8, 2024, 00:00-23:59 WIB, showed 58 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-23 millimeters and durations of 65-178 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 7 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 3-8 mm and durations of 53-98 seconds, and 9 emission quakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 30-55 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan river, up to 13 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan river due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lahar flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,510 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (856 times), while Mount Semeru erupted 854 times.
