Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts on Sunday Morning, Status is Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (March 8, 2026) at 09.37 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 9 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height is around 1,000 meters above the peak (2,584 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 115 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 8, 2026 from 00.00-23.59 WITA showed 22 non-harmonic tremors with an amplitude of 2.9-11 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 53-203 seconds.

Then, 6 low-frequency earthquakes with an amplitude of 5.9-14.8 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 19-29 seconds, as well as 2 deep volcanic earthquakes with an amplitude of 4.4-7.4 millimeters, s-p 1.2-1.7 seconds, and an earthquake duration of 10-11 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 4-kilometer radius of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki eruption center.

During 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 895 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (456 times) while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 9 times.
