Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, July 12, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 6:12 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 32 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 500 meters above the peak or 1,825 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray to black with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10 millimeters and a duration of 276 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on July 12, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 7 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 9-12 millimeters and durations of 72-304 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 31-82 seconds, and 128 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 8-21 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,601 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (692 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 235 times.
