Mount Ibu Erupts Again Early This Morning (Sunday, February 8, 2026)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (February 8, 2026) at 01:02 WIT. In the past week, Mount Ibu has erupted 39 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 800 meters above the peak (2,125 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 47 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Warning). Earthquake observations on February 8, 2026, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 104 eruption/explosion earthquakes with an amplitude of 10-28 millimeters and a duration of 38-66 seconds.

Then, 11 harmonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-28 millimeters and a duration of 55-138 seconds, as well as 84 low-frequency earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-8 millimeters and a duration of 17-29 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 510 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (267 times) while Mount Ibu has erupted 208 times.
