Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Friday, January 2, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday (1/2/2026) at 05:46 AM Western Indonesian Time. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 5 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption's visual was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 116 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 2, 2026, from 18:00 to 23:59 Western Indonesian Time, showed 19 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-23 millimeters and durations of 73-151 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 2 mm and a duration of 38 seconds, and 15 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 44-68 seconds.

PVMBG urges against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, the public is advised not to engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 13 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (8 times), while Mount Semeru erupted 5 times.
