Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Tuesday, February 17, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday (February 17, 2026) at 00:17 WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 12 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed is around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

Eruption visuals were not observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Standby). Seismic observations on February 17, 2026 from 18:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 29 eruption/explosion earthquakes with an amplitude of 11-22 millimeters and a duration of 59-121 seconds.

Then, 2 harmonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 7-8 millimeters and a duration of 94-191 seconds, as well as 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 29 millimeters, s-p time of 60 seconds and a duration of 178 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 639 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 332 events.
