Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Tonight (Wednesday, January 7, 2026)

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday (7/1/2026) at 18:02 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 5 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the east. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 17.5 millimeters and a duration of 74 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 7, 2026, from 00:00-23:59 WITA, showed 218 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 13.7-35.2 millimeters and durations of 35-99 seconds.

Additionally, there were 299 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.7-13.8 millimeters and durations of 25-60 seconds, and 2 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.3-7.5 millimeters and durations of 93-102 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 2-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and sectorally in the south-southeast and west up to 2.5 kilometers from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 101 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (58 times), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 5 times.
