Alert! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Tuesday, March 3, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday (March 3, 2026) at 05.00 WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No visual observation of the eruption was made. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 124 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 3, 2026 from 18.00-23.59 WIB showed 18 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 50-148 seconds.

Then, 8 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 33-75 seconds, as well as 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-15 millimeters, s-p times of 11-22 seconds, and durations of 32-62 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents should avoid activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lahar flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 819 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 418 events.
