PVMBG: Mount Ibu Erupts Again, 23 Eruptions Recorded Today

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 4:25 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 105 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,000 meters above the peak (2,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption of Mount Ibu was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 7, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 10 eruption quakes with an amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 61-75 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 13 tremor quakes with an amplitude of 2-20 millimeters and a duration of 30-60 seconds, and 77 shallow volcanic quakes with an amplitude of 2-10 millimeters and a duration of 6-14 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,555 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has experienced the most eruptions with 1,424 eruptions.
