Warning! Mount Marapi Erupts Again Tonight (Thursday, October 9, 2025)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Thursday (9/10/2025) at 10:54 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 3 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) through the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 1,200 meters above the peak (4,091 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28.3 millimeters and a duration of 44 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on October 9, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB showed 2 times of exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.1-4.4 millimeters and earthquake durations of 31-59 seconds.

Then, 1 shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 0.8 millimeters and an earthquake duration of 12 seconds, and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.2 millimeters s-p 4.9 seconds and an earthquake duration of 24 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Marapi and hikers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,600 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,592 times) while Mount Marapi erupted 110 times.
