Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Reaches Approximately 2,500 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (November 8, 2024) at 1:14 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 32 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 2,500 meters above the peak or 4,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 44.4 millimeters and a duration of 366 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level IV (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on November 8, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 11-14.8 millimeters and durations of 59-977 seconds.

Then, there was 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 51 seconds, and 1 local tectonic quake with an amplitude of 11 millimeters, s-p 5 seconds, and a duration of 20 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 7-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki, and a sectoral 8-kilometer radius in the Southwest-Northwest direction.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,910 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,970 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 895 times.
