Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches Approximately 300 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 09:53 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 37 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 300 meters above the peak (1,625 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color with low to moderate intensity towards the south. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18 millimeters and a duration of 39 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations from December 3, 2024, 00:00-06:00 WIT, showed 35 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 32-81 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 rockfall event with an amplitude of 2 mm and a duration of 28 seconds, and 71 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-6 millimeters and durations of 18-60 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5.5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.
