Warning! Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Morning (Friday, August 29, 2025)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday (8/29/2025) at 09:35 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 300 meters above the peak (3,191 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with moderate intensity towards the southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 2.5 millimeters and a duration of 23 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 29, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIB, showed 4 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 1-1.2 millimeters and durations of 37-59 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 20 non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 0.75-2.5 millimeters and durations of 81-383 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 1 millimeter, S-P time of 1.2 seconds, and a duration of 10 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and hikers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of activity (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,870 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,351 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 91 times.
