Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Afternoon, Volcanic Ash Reaches 1,100 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, December 6, 2024, at 11:45 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,100 meters above the peak or 2,187 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the east and southeast. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on December 6, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 86 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-34 millimeters and durations of 45.05-283.04 seconds.

Then, there were 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-14 millimeters, s-p 19.03-24.44 seconds, and durations of 80.91-81.01 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 1-6 millimeters, dominant at 6 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,744 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,373 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 58 times.
