Food Insecurity Prevalence in Supiori Reaches 27.98% in 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) in Supiori Regency, Papua, reached 27.98% in 2023.

This figure is up 6.59% from the previous year's 21.39%, while it has decreased by 23.63% over the past five years.

The average PoU in Indonesia was 8.53% in 2023. This means that the PoU in Supiori Regency is higher than the national average.

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) defines PoU as a condition where an individual regularly consumes an insufficient amount of food to meet the energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life. This indicator can be used as a tool to assess food and nutrition insecurity.

This means that the percentage of the population in Supiori Regency who consume food but lack sufficient energy needs does not reach 27.98% of the total population.

Compared to eight other regencies/cities in Papua Province, Supiori Regency ranks third in terms of PoU. The area with the lowest PoU (highest ranking) is Jayapura City (18.59%), and the highest (lowest ranking) is Mamberamo Raya Regency (48.03%).
