Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Friday, January 30, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday (Jan 30, 2026) at 7:50 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 27 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

Visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 123 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 30, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB, showed 19 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 63-132 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 distant tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 15 millimeters, an S-P time of 13 seconds, and an earthquake duration of 54 seconds, as well as 2 flood tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-35 millimeters and earthquake durations of 3600-5100 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, the public is advised not to engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river boundaries) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 401 volcano eruptions/explosions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most, with 209 times.
