Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height Approximately 500 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Friday, March 21, 2025, at 7:40 a.m. WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 28 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 44 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 21, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. WIT showed 26 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-28 millimeters and durations of 29-82 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 51 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 18-48 seconds, and 57 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-4 millimeters and durations of 7-14 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,335 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,063 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 930 times.
