Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Tuesday, January 14, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 1:33 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 46 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on January 14, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 55 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 54-172 seconds.

Then, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 2 mm and a duration of 86 seconds, and 6 emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-8 millimeters and durations of 22-90 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for the expansion of pyroclastic flows and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 326 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 195 eruptions.
