Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning, Volcanic Ash Reaches 800 Meters Above Peak

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (August 21, 2025) at 06:09 AM WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column reached 800 meters above the peak (1,887 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 21, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 10 eruption tremors/earthquakes with amplitudes of 6-10 millimeters and earthquake durations of 33.61-138.85 seconds. Additionally, there was 1 continuous tremor earthquake with an amplitude of 1-6 millimeters, predominantly 2 millimeters.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities, climb, or approach Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,717 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,295 times) while Mount Dukono erupted 480 times.
