Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Plume Approximately 500 Meters High

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (August 15, 2025) at 12:40 PM WITA. In the past week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 7 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 500 meters above the peak or 1,923 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 32.9 millimeters and a duration of 35 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 15, 2025, from 06:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA, showed 51 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 6.7-26.9 millimeters and durations of 29-59 seconds.

Subsequently, there were 29 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-5.9 millimeters and durations of 27-30 seconds, and 1 non-harmonic tremor with an amplitude of 4.1 millimeters and a duration of 89 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/hikers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and to be aware of the potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the Southern and Southeastern sectors, Western sector, and Northeastern sector of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,621 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,251 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 233 times.
