Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Evening (Saturday, March 15, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 3:49 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 65 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 49 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 15, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 33 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14-28 millimeters and durations of 27-47 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 19 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 17-26 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 6-9 millimeters and durations of 54-118 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,194 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,012 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 897 times.
