Alert! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Early This Morning (Tuesday, February 24, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Tuesday (February 24, 2026) at 01:51 WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

Eruption visuals were not observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 248 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on February 24, 2026 from 18:00-23:59 WIB showed 16 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 76-136 seconds.

Then, 7 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-6 millimeters and durations of 45-51 seconds, as well as 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 20-30 millimeters, s-p 13 seconds, and durations of 43-220 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, residents should not carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 747 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 392 events.
